Referring Youth to LYRIC: Suggestions for Teachers
& Other Adult Allies

What is LYRIC?
LYRIC – the Lavender Youth Recreation and Information Center- is a community center for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQQ) youth. Since 1988, LYRIC has provided support for thousands of youth through our conferences, dances, programs at the LYRIC House, community outreach events, and in-school presentations. All of our programs are designed to promote mutual respect, safety, and social interaction.

Who can I refer to your services?
Any youth 24 and under. Although our services are geared towards queer youth, we welcome straight and non-queer identified youth who are queer-friendly and comfortable in a queer environment.

What are your hours?
LYRIC’s office hours are Monday-Friday, 10-6pm; however, programs designed for youth participation may have different hours. For example, the After School Program (ASP), also known as “Drop-In,” is open Monday-Friday, 3-6pm. For more information about specific program times, please check out our Calendar of Events or call our office (415-703-6150).

What is the best way to connect youth with LYRIC?
When you refer a young person to LYRIC, try to set up an appointment with a staff member. Drop-in hours at LYRIC can be intimidating for participants—especially new and younger youth. However, staff members can help new participants become acquainted with the space and connect them with programs that will best suit their needs.

Set up a field trip to the LYRIC House! When classes visit LYRIC, we can host workshops, facilitate discussions, or lead Q&A sessions. Please call in advance to schedule a visit.

Bring LYRIC to your classroom! LYRIC can provide programming that is not only age-appropriate, but tailored to the needs of your classroom. We are happy to work with teachers and adult allies, in order to create workshops that meet the needs of their students.

Attend conferences and dances with groups of students. Curious about the role of adults at youth events? Contact us for more information!

What if a young person isn’t ready to attend a LYRIC event?
Staffed by youth volunteers, the talkline was one of LYRIC’s most successful programs. Now operated by the Gay and Lesbian National Hotline, this service is a wonderful way for youth to receive peer-based support, without having to disclose their identity. To reach the Youth Talkline, please call 1-(800)-246-PRIDE.
