AB 537, the California Student Safety and Violence Prevention Act of 2000, changed California's Education Code by adding sexual orientation and gender to the Code's umbrella nondiscrimination provisions. This will make it illegal for schools to discriminate against LGBT students or to allow the school environment to get so hostile for LGBT students that they are, in effect, denied equal access to an education. Black and Pink is a resource for those interested in supporting queer people
behind bars. Black and Pink provides an outlet for queer people inside the
prison system to get poetry and other writing out as well as have their names
and contact information listed on the pen pal page. Queer people in prison
experience even greater violence as homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia
run rampant through all levels of the prison system, from the top officials
to the other prisoners.
